YOU ARE HERE BY DESIGN

St. Louis, MO, United States
1) DESIGNERS CAN MAKE THINGS HAPPEN. ex: We got you to come to our website. 2) IN OUR WORLD, EITHER THE DESIGNER OR THE DESIGNED FOR IS HUMAN. ex: You are human and so are we. 3) DESIGNERS CAN WORK MORE EFFECTIVELY IF THEY UNDERSTAND HUMAN NATURE. ex: We know people are wary of having their flies open in public. 4) DESIGN AT ITS SIMPLEST IS AN ACT OF MANIPULATION OF HUMANS, WHAT THEY WANT, AND HOW THAT DRIVES THEIR CHOICES.

Based on these assumptions, we conceived Design Is Power, an exploration of human nature. Through a series of ‘experiments’ (using the Washington University community as our test population) that incite reaction and action, we are exposing several human tendencies. Ultimately, we want our viewers to question their impulses and realize their roles in a designed world. And as student designers, we hope to explore the range of human responses we can call upon in our work.

So where do you come in?
Your participation in each designed moment completes its message, and we seek to activate the dialogue between designer and viewer. Whether you are a participant or just a curious observer, we encourage you to share your thoughts by commenting.

Made You Look

Medium: Post-It Notes
Location: Personal affects, campus wide

We discreetly placed 500 sticky notes in people’s personal spaces, creating for each an intimate encounter with a comment from an unknown source. The reader is made to question the truth of the statement, and then forced to decide whether or not to act upon it in order to quell his fears or fulfill his need for social belonging.

I was sleeping in the library and woke up to "your fly is open" on my backpack.
I was embarrassed and figured a friend wrote that for me when they passed, and then realized my fly was no open and the note was fake. bravo, you got me

We would've put it on your leg, but you looked so peaceful. The fact that you were in the vulnerable position of being asleep makes your reaction even stronger. Glad you took it so well.

I saw the "your fly is open" post-it note on the inside of the bathroom door as I was leaving. I always check my fly before I go into crowded places--just a little swipe with my right pinky to make sure I didn't leave it down. But thanks for the reminder! Much appreciated.

I was sitting at a table in a nice quaint cafe across from three gorgeous women and turned around to talk to a group of fellows seated in my rear. When I turned back around, much to my surprise, there was a yellow post-it-note that read "Your Fly is Open" written in loopy hand-writing (much like of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter books). Immediately, without a second thought, I peered down at my blue-jeaned crotch to examine my zipper situation...and of course my fly was fully zipped.

I had already fallen for the old cooke trick--I took a free cookie eventhough the vessel in which I took it from claimed that it had been sneezed on (achoo achoo)--and I knew one of the protagonists of design is power...so I was even in on the trick. The fact of the matter is that there are just some things that humans are programmed to do...check flys, go around caution tape, look up when told to, and pick your teeth when there's something in them.

It is a cool idea to attempt to use "art" to influence human nature...other ideas to try:

1.) Pop out from behind trees in a funny costume and film reactions.
2.) Put random objects (not necessarily live) in toilets and comment on reactions (or fart machines in the stahl next to another with loud moans)
3.) Make a consistent noise (like a noticeable electrical hum) in a quiet place and see if people look for it (e.g. study rooms in library).
4.) Stink bombs in public places. Enough said.
5.) Mock fights in public places. Cat fights are the best.

I unfortunately didn't see any of the things put up, but am definitely looking forward to seeing some next time!

Things to consider: perhaps move some of the experiments to the 40 and/or the Village?

Keep up the innovative work!
